Mapping from ASTER stereo image data: DEM validation and accuracy assessment

چکیده
The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on-board the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Terra spacecraft provides along-track digital stereo image data at 15-m resolution. As part of ASTER digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy evaluation efforts by the US/Japan ASTER Science Team, stereo image data for four study sites around the world have been employed to validate prelaunch estimates of heighting accuracy. Automated stereocorrelation procedures were implemented using the Desktop Mapping System (DMS) software on a personal computer to derive DEMs with 30to 150-m postings. Results indicate that a root-mean-square error (RMSE) in elevation between F 7 and F 15 m can be achieved with ASTER stereo image data of good quality. An evaluation of an ASTER DEM data product produced at the US Geological Survey (USGS) EROS Data Center (EDC) yielded an RMSE of F 8.6 m. Overall, the ability to extract elevations from ASTER stereopairs using stereocorrelation techniques meets expectations. D 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The accuracy of a DEM derived from ASTER data using differential GPS measurements
ASTER is a high-spatial resolution, multispectral imaging system flying aboard TERRA, a satellite launched in December 1999 as part of NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS). An ASTER scene covering 61.5 km x 63 km contains data from 14 spectral bands. An ASTER Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is generated using bands 3N (nadir) and 3B (backward) level 1A images acquired by the Visible Near Infra-red...

Digital elevatio models (DEMs) were generated from a stereo pair using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiomete (ASTER) backward and nadir images with 27.7 intersection angles ( = 0 6) over a high relief area of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Fifteen ground control points were a good compromise to compute the stereo-bundle adjustment when they are only 25–30 m precise to...
متن کاملHydrologic land cover classification mapping at local level with the combined use of ASTER multispectral imagery and GPS measurements
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and land cover products are primary inputs for hydrologic models of surface runoff that affects infiltration, erosion, and evapotranspiration. DEM and land cover play important role in determining the runoff characteristics of specific catchment areas. Recently, at local level, a number of data sources have been used to derive land cover products for high resolut...

متن کاملCombining satellite multispectral image data and a digital elevation model for mapping debris-covered glaciers
Automated glacier mapping from satellite multispectral image data is hampered by debris cover on glacier surfaces. Supraglacial debris exhibits the same spectral properties as lateral and terminal moraines, fluvioglacial deposits, and bedrock outside the glacier margin, and is thus not detectable by means of multispectral classification alone. Based on the observation of low slope angles for de...
